One of the best ways to save money is to try and do as much of one's own home repairs and maintenance projects as possible. Of course, large scale, complex projects will require the help of a professional. However, small, day to day projects can be easily completed with the correct tools, gear and a little elbow grease. The work is rewarding; in that one is sure to feel a sense of accomplishment by tightening a pipe or assembling a bookcase.
A basic, important tool to own is the proper wrench. A wrench is used to aid individuals in turning nuts, bolts and other difficult to turn items, by applying the proper amount of torque and impact. A commonly used wrench is the open-ended, adjustable wrench which has adjustable jaws to fit the size of the bolt or nut. This wrench has a U shaped head, which is designed to hold the bolt or nut.
Three types of adjustable wrenches are the monkey wrench, the crescent wrench and the pipe wrench. Another type of wrench is the socket wrench, which has a hollow end that fits over the nut or bolt. Several types of socket wrenches include the crawfoot socket wrench, the saltus wrench, the mole grip wrench, the box spanner and the slogging spanner.
Another type of socket wrench is the torque wrench. A torque wrench is employed when a specific amount of tightness is required on a bolt or nut. The torque wrench will measure the amount of torque which is used; the user can then meet whatever torque measurement is required. Typical torque wrenches include the beam-type torque wrench, the click-type torque wrench and the no-hub torque wrench. The main difference between these torque wrenches is the precision of the calibration, the impact of force required by the user, as well as how the individual will read the level of torque being applied.
The Allen wrench, also known as a hex key, is a wrench made to screw in bolts with a hexagon shaped socket. The Allen wrench is typically L shaped, compact and light. The torque on the Allen wrench depends on the thickness of the key. An Allen wrench is usually included with items such as furniture that the individual will have to assemble themselves.
For one stop shopping, the Sears online catalog provides all these wrenches and more, at reasonable prices. A Craftsman 32 piece wrench set costs about $70, and includes 22 regular length wrenches in a variety of sizes, as well as 10 midget wrenches. The Sears website not only offers specifications on every wrench item, it also provides helpful customer feedback and opinions. The site also states whether the wrench is available for pick up in-store, in case the user would like to visit its local Sears store, to see the product before purchasing.
Another online store with good quality wrenches is Home Depot. Like Sears, the user can research the product online before they buy, and then either purchase online, or visit their local Home Depot Store to buy. For example, a Husky 8-piece wrench set can be found for about $20, and includes 8 matted wrenches with a lifetime guarantee. The Home Depot page also provides helpful suggestions as to other tools and items the purchaser might find useful for their home repair and maintenance needs.
Anyone can learn to do simple tasks such as tighten a table leg or stop a pesky faucet leak. Armed with the correct tools and a little research, simple home repairs can become easy and even fun to accomplish. An important tool for everyone to own is the right wrench, and luckily, wrench kits are available which have several different types to fit every need. Not only will this help the homeowner keep their house beautiful, it will also cut down on the cost of paying others to do work that one can do for themselves.
